So, what is our best? Our best is a dedicated work ethic, combined with creativity that reaches to infinity and beyond. Creativity and imagination that will allow you to compete with Disney, Universal, and the Smithsonian without breaking your budget.
At Popcorn Attractions, we have a wealth of experience. Experience in many aspects of entertainment, including: Video Mapping and Projection, Film and Video Production, 3D Animation, Music Recording, Songwriting, Animatronics, Set and Prop Construction, Costume Creations, and Special Effects including water, fog, and lighting, and many other skills which allow us to create magical themed environments.
We have a tight knit freelance pool of skilled designers and creative engineers who have accumulated their skills through a myriad of experiences worldwide in the middle of the some of the most exciting theme park, museum, movie, and television projects ever created. Though we cannot talk about all of them (some of them are under NDA) on this website, we can mention that through our experience, we have rubbed shoulders with creative people like Steven Spielberg, respected studios like Walt Disney Productions, in amazing places throughout the world, including Europe, Asia, and the US.
We aim to please and will go the extra mile to deliver what you need. Then, as Walt Disney used to say, we continue to “plus” each ride or attraction we theme until we have exceeded our clients’ expectations. We think outside-the-box regarding what your guests will expect, and then go way beyond their expectations to create something new, something original. Perhaps we add a new twist on an old classic, or introduce a new technology that no one else in your part of the world has ever seen before. Sometimes we combine elements that haven’t been used together previously. Tinkering, inventing, and playing “researching” are encouraged around our office so that we can create new ideas, combining technology and creativity to remain leaders in our field. We recognize that ultimately it is your audience who needs to be thrilled. We enjoy receiving praise from our peers, the critics, and others who have appreciate our themed exhibits, rides and attractions, but what we really desire to do most is amaze your audience with innovate new creations. And, we know your audience. We love to wow your audience. Your family audience. We know how to layer our ideas so that parents, grandparents, and children will be amazed. And, as we amaze them, we know that we will also please you, our collaborator – our creative partner – our entertainment friends.
One of our favorite things to design are Dark Rides. What are dark rides? Aren’t they a thing of the past? Typically, when others try to explain what Dark Rides are, they use old fashioned examples of rides like Disney’s “Snow White” in Fantasyland. Slow moving, dark, moody stories told through two-dimensional scenery, as you ride on a less-than-enthusiastic track inside a tiny, two passenger or four passenger vehicle. Not here. At Popcorn Attractions, when we talk about dark rides, we include indoor roller coasters, plunging water rides, and anything else where there is mucho theming in a controlled environment. We include walk any immersive environment where we use lighting, audio, video projection, animatronics, and many other art forms in our bag of tricks to enhance awesome, moving ride experiences. One of our favorite examples of a classic, well-made, themed dark ride is the “Pirates of the Carribbean” ride at the Disney theme parks. Why does this themed dark ride work so well? In our opinion, it’s because the experience for the guests is so immersive. First, the ride mechanism (water) provides guests with such an smooth ride that you quickly forget you’re even on a ride at all. It’s suspends our belief system. Also, there is a smooth transition from the real world into this pirate adventure as the boats drop several times until finally you are drifting through this new, three-dimensional pirate world. You begin to believe that you have really journeyed to a new place because the themed environment is all around you. As you explore around you, you see very little behind the scenes lighting and other show elements. Guests are given time to look around and convince themselves with their eyes and ears that they have journeyed somewhere else. This is what creates that suspension of belief and why audiences around the world love this ride so much.
Here at Popcorn Attractions, we consider ourselves part of a revolution that is taking place throughout the theme park world – the resurgence of dark rides. The world is no longer satisfied with thrill rides that only thrill, nor are they satisfied with jerky, slow moving rides that throw two-dimensional scenery in front of us and expect us to get lost in the story. We seek to go beyond this. We seek to find, new innovative ways to create an immersive themed environment, with a satisfying combination of lighting, sound, color, props, sets, realistic characters. We seek to create smooth stories and attraction flow that guest can experience the wonderful feeling of being transported from their reality into a make-believe environment where they, their friends and family, can experience a child-like wonderment together. We want your guests to come experience our new collaborative attraction and leave so enthused that, like a child, they remain so giddy about the experience that they have no choice but to tell everyone else about it and and can hardly wait to return and repeat their experience all over again. This website features interviews with some of our top designers, our philosophies and research about what works and what doesn’t in the mixed up and ever changing world of telling stories through three dimensional environments. We feel lucky to have been involved in many fascinating projects in the past and will do our best to show you some of what we’ve learned while creating environments guests have been able to lose themselves in. We hope you will enjoy looking around our website and look forward to hearing your ideas and desires so we can continue to push this envelope forward together.
